Brač

With its area (394,6 km2) island Brač is the third Adriatic island regarding its size. The forth of its area is covered with forests and the rest of area is covered with karst fields (mainly olives groves and vineyards) as well as with Mediterranean plants (macchia).

Land lubbers and aquatic types alike can spend several pleasant days exploring the attractive coastal villages of Brač. All of them have a medieval atmosphere in their old quarters, with narrow, cobblestone alleys winding up from the seafront; nearly all stone buildings with green shutters; medieval fortress towers built for defense against pirates and the Turks; and centuries old churches. The views offshore are wonderful, and there are plenty of outdoor cafes and restaurants from which to soak them up.

The island of Brač with a coastline of 172 kilometers is well known for its lovely coves and beaches. ZLATNI RAT, one of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic, is situated in the southern part of the island near Bol. This pebble-stone, unique cape is half a kilometer long and looks like a long, white tongue, which changes its shape and position depending on the wind and waves. Maybe less known but nonetheless beautiful is Lovrečina Bay, which is 4 km east of Postira. It is one of the most beautiful sand beaches on the island. Yet you may prefer to find a little cove to enjoy on your own, there are several smaller bays in the vicinity with sandy pebbled and rocky beaches.

The island of Brač is separated from the mainland by The Brač canal, which is 6 – 13 kilometers wide. The island is easily accessible by ferry from Split, which goes round the clock during the summer season, and several times a day during the rest of the year. Comfortable ferry ride takes about 45 minutes from Split harbor to Supetar port. You can also reach Brač by car/passenger ferry either from Makarska to Sumartin on the south-east tip of the island or a passenger ferry service, which runs between Split to Bol or Milna.
