Murter

The Island of Murter is situated at the Northern Dalmatian coast line between the two well-known cities of Zadar in the North and Sibenik in the South. Murter Island lies in the North-Western part of the Sibenik archipelago, separated from the main land by a channel measuring 20 meters only and connected by a brigde of 37 meters width. Vacationers do not have to bother here with the hassle of an island transfer by ferry boat, but may well enjoy the distinct island character. Small and pretty local villages reveal their typical Dalmatian flair and offer wonderful bays for sun bathing and swimming plus other beach activities.

The islands surface amounts to 17.5 km². The hill Raduc with an altitude of 125 m is the highest point of the island. The South-Western part tentatively features rocky shores, interrupted by sandy little bays. The island offers mostly stony beaches and some sand beaches. The Island of Murters main village carries the same name. To the North-East of the village of Murter there is Betina while the villages of Jezera and Tisno are located on the South-Eastern coast. In total the island has 5.192 inhabitants. The new part of Murter has grown together with the old center Stari Murter and also Betina seamlessly connects. Surrounded by fig plantations the old village is being dominiated by natural stone houses with coloured window shutters and partially lushly vegetated little gardens.

On Vrsina hill you can enjoy a wide around view, with the old town below, the newer Murter and Betina in the North, and the whitely seamed bay with its close-by islands behind. Continue by spotting the "masts forest" of the yachts in Hramina Bay, the Murter Canal in the East and the Kornati Islands in the West. Coffee shops, souvenir stands and a little fruit market stun with their calmness and at the same time shape the newly designed Trg Rudina, the little main square.

Fishing and farming belongs to the traditional employments of the islanders. Murter is well-known for its outstanding olive oil. The nautic toursim counts as an all-year industry. This is how the majority of the touristic income is generated. Smooth green hills, vegetated with pine and olive tree, characterize the local landscape - in turns with the intense blue of the sea. In between there often appears the white of a sailing boat.

Hard to be described by words, the way the overwhelming beauty of this part of the coast line reveals itself to the viewer. In a deep blue the Murter Sea extends infront of you, from the first sun beams in the morning in the East to the orangy sunset in the West - always with an eye of the offshore islands of the Kornati National Park.
